Adstoppi Blog | The Hunger Games is getting a prequel next year

Published by:

Suzanne Collins is bringing back The Hunger Games, with the author announcing a new prequel novel that takes place 64 years before the events of the first book in the series, set for release on May 19th, 2020.

“With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival,” Collins said in an announcement to AP. “The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days — as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet — provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

The time period isn’t one we know much about from Collins’ existing trilogy. For reference, The Hunger Games sees the events of the 74th iteration of the annual titular competition (in which Katniss and Peeta compete). That would put the prequel beyond the lifetime of almost all the characters we know from the books, except for President Snow, who at the time that the prequel is set would be about 11 years old.

ased on the previous novels in the series, though, we do know that 74 years before the main novels (and ten years before the new prequel), the 13 Districts of Panem tried to rebel against the Capital. But the rebellion was put down, with 12 of the Districts put back under Capital control and the system of the Hunger Games instituted to remind the Districts of their place (District 13 was secretly left in a cold war of mutually assured destruction due to its control over nuclear weaponry).

TikTok has reversed a ban and apologized to an American teenager whose account was locked after she posted a video criticizing the Chinese government over its treatment of Uighur Muslims, the New York Times reports. TikTok says it is conducting a review into its moderation policies and processes, and plans to publish its first transparency report in the coming months. In a blog post, the company claims that 17-year old Feroza Aziz's account was restricted because she used a previous account (@getmefamousplzsir) to post a comedic video involving a picture of Osama bin Laden. This account was banned because of TikTok's policies against imagery relating to terrorist figures. Then, just over a week later, the company says it banned 2,406 devices associated with banned accounts. Since Aziz's...

The ongoing US-China trade war under the Trump administration is threatening the livelihood of the last remaining television manufacturing factory in America, reports Reuters. Element Electronics, a South Carolina-based factory that assembles TVs for Walmart, is at risk of closure after a new proposal would impose a 25 percent import tax for all Chinese goods. Element opened its plant in 2012, supplying the majority of its TVs for Walmart’s Made in America initiative. The factory assembles its TVs using Chinese-made components by testing, packaging, and inserting memory boards onto the device. Though most of the TV itself made in China, Element is careful to specify on the packaging that its products are “Assembled in the USA.” (This practice has drawn criticisms from the Alliance...

What is Snowsquall

Published by:

A snowsquall (or snow squall) is a sudden moderately heavy snowfall with blowing snow and strong, gusty surface winds.[1] It is often referred to as a whiteout and is similar to a blizzard but is localized in time or in location and snow accumulations may or may not be significant. Types: Lake-effect snow When arctic air moves over large expanses of warmer open waters in winter, convective clouds develop which cause heavy snow showers due to a large amount of moisture available. This occurs southwest of extratropical cyclones, with the curved cyclonic wind flow bringing cold air across the relatively warm Great Lakes which then leads to narrow lake-effect snow bands that can produce significant localized snowfall.[2] Whiteout conditions will affect narrow corridors from shores to inland...

Google announced today that it's teaming up with three security companies to help identify malicious apps before they're published on the Play Store and can potentially do harm to Android users. The company is calling this partnership the App Defense Alliance. Android is on over 2.5 billion devices, according to Google, and the company says that makes the platform "an attractive target" for abuse. That abuse can take the form of hidden malware or secret code designed to spy and siphon away sensitive user data. This seems to be particularly true of the Play Store — over the past year or so, Google has had to take action against multiple developers for releasing apps on the Play Store using scammy ad practices. By forming the App Defense Alliance, Google is enlisting security companies...

The world's biggest phone show, Mobile World Congress, is no longer taking place this year. After coronavirus threatened to throw MWC into chaos, the GSM Association (GSMA), which organizes the show, has now canceled it. It comes after more than a week of exhibitors and companies pulling out of MWC. In a statement, GSMA CEO John Hoffman said the coronavirus outbreak has made it "impossible" to hold the event. MWC was scheduled to take place in Barcelona between February 24th and the 27th. Coronavirus infections have exceeded 42,000 with the total number of deaths at more than 1,000. Most infections and deaths have been reported in Wuhan and the surrounding Hubei Province in China, but at least 25 countries have now reported cases. The GSMA had tried to allay fears with increased...
