Adstoppi Blog | Sony pulls Spider-Man out of the MCU over profit-sharing dispute with Disney

Published by:

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has pulled out of producing future Spider-Man movies, due to disputes between Sony — which still holds the rights to the character — and Marvel’s parent company Disney over revenue sharing from films starring the web-slinging hero, according to a report from Deadline.

The news means that Spider-Man’s appearances in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe films — as well as crossovers from characters like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man or Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in future Spider-Man films — could end with Spider-Man: Far From Home, released earlier this summer.

According to Deadline’s sources, the issue is money: Disney reportedly asked that future Spider-Man films be 50 / 50 coproductions between Disney and Sony, instead of the current deal, which is said to give Marvel (and Disney) 5 percent of gross box-office revenue.

That’s significant money — Spider-Man: Far From Home, made over $1 billion at the box office, which translates to more than $50 million for Disney. But it’s nowhere close to the total that the solo Feige-produced Spider-Man movies have brought in for Sony. (Far From Home recently became the most lucrative film Sony’s ever made.) Disney appears to feel that its stewardship of the franchise and the ties to the MCU films (like Avengers: Endgame, which eventually added a Far From Home trailer as a post-credits scene for its theatrical release) are responsible for those numbers, and it wants a bigger piece of the pie. Sony apparently disagreed, and now it seems that the two studios will be going their separate ways again.

According to Deadline’s report, Sony apparently feels that the combined creative team of director Jon Watts (who helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming and the sequel, Far From Home), actor Tom Holland, and producer Amy Pascal will be enough to keep the Spider-Man franchise momentum going for future films, even without Feige’s involvement.

Marvel Studios and Sony first agreed on a deal over Spider-Man in 2015, which would allow for the character to appear in crossover Marvel films, even though Sony maintained the rights to the character and was responsible for financing, distributing, and “final creative control.” Holland was cast as the character shortly afterward, and he went on to appear in the role in three Disney films — Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame — as well as in the two Marvel Studios-produced, Sony-owned solo films. Per the original reports of Holland’s contract, he still has one solo film left, although Deadline’s report notes that there are at least two more Jon Watts-directed films starring Holland in the works.

In addition to those two Spider-Man films, Sony has big plans for the franchise and its associated characters. After a less-than-stellar period of Spider-Man films in the early 2010s (which was part of the reason for the Marvel deal in the first place), the studio has a slate of Spider-films planned: an upcoming Venom sequel, set to be directed by Andy Serkis; the Jared Leto-led Morbius the Living Vampire; a Kraven the Hunter film; a Silver Sable / Black Cat film; and a follow-up to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

Apple will be hosting a special event on December 2nd that will honor the company's "favorite apps and games of 2019." The event comes as a surprise; Apple has handed out awards for its apps of the year in the past but not with a press event. Apple isn't expected to announce new products, according to CNBC. The event is not currently listed on Apple's event website. Apple has been pushing further into curation with the surprisingly good Apple Arcade and not-as-good (yet) Apple TV Plus, and hosting its own app awards show is another step down that path. Apple was previously known for determining what many of us viewed content on, but as of late, it's trying to determine what some of that content is as...

On November 19th, Google will officially become a game company, one with its very own console, controller, and distribution platform for the latest triple-A games. If all goes well, it may stand shoulder to shoulder with Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo and Steam, or even surpass them someday. That's because Google is the biggest, best-positioned company to ever throw its weight behind cloud gaming — a technology that lets you play a game without discs or downloads, by streaming them from remote servers, just like you'd stream a YouTube video to your TV, laptop, or even the phone in your pocket. We live in a time where almost every new musical prodigy has formed an identity on YouTube long before they break through to mainstream Hollywood. Halle Bailey, the new face of Disney’s Little Mermaid, is a perfect example. Disney announced on Wednesday that Bailey, currently 19-years-old, would play Princess Ariel in the company’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. She began making a name for herself as an actress on ABC’s Grownish, a spinoff of its popular series, Blackish that premiered in 2018, but she developed an even bigger fanbase far before that on YouTube. Halle, alongside her older sister Chloe, have amassed more than one million subscribers on YouTube thanks to their astonishing covers of songs from artists like Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé...

Playdate - the world's cutest game console

Panic, the venerable Mac and iOS software firm, made a major splash the other week with the announcement of its first hardware device. The Playdate is a bright yellow handheld gaming console with a monochrome screen; it was co-designed by Swedish hardware wizards Teenage Engineering and features exclusive releases from renowned developers like Zach Gage, Bennett Foddy, and Keita Takahashi. I just met with Takahashi at BitSummit, the ever-growing annual indie game festival in Kyoto, and got the chance to play his game Crankin’s Time Travel Adventure on his own Playdate unit. The hardware isn’t finished from a technical perspective — Takahashi’s model is marked “evaluation only” on the back and needed multiple hard resets during our meeting. But from a design perspective, it’s...

Google’s in-house incubator, Area 120, is working on a new social networking app called Shoelace which is aimed at organizing local events and activities. You use it by listing your interests in the app, allowing it to recommend a series of “hand-picked” local activities which it calls “Loops.” You can also organize your own events, and there’s a map interface to view and RSVP to other people’s Loops. Shoelace’s soft-launch comes just months after Google shut down Google+, its most prominent attempt at building a social media platform. However, rather than trying to create a new all-encompassing social network to rival the likes of Facebook, Shoelace seems to have much more modest ambitions that take aim at Facebook’s ubiquitous Events functionality. TikTok has reversed a ban and apologized to an American teenager whose account was locked after she posted a video criticizing the Chinese government over its treatment of Uighur Muslims, the New York Times reports. TikTok says it is conducting a review into its moderation policies and processes, and plans to publish its first transparency report in the coming months. In a blog post, the company claims that 17-year old Feroza Aziz's account was restricted because she used a previous account (@getmefamousplzsir) to post a comedic video involving a picture of Osama bin Laden. This account was banned because of TikTok's policies against imagery relating to terrorist figures. Then, just over a week later, the company says it banned 2,406 devices associated with banned accounts. Since Aziz's...
