Today, coinciding with the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 5, Apple has launched Apple Watch Studio, a way to mix and match Watch casings and Watch straps to order the exact Apple Watch Series 5 that you want. It’s available right now on Apple’s website and in the Apple Store App, and will be coming to Apple’s retail stores in the future. Previously, Apple only let you customize your Watch by picking from Apple-selected sets of casings and straps, and by buying individual straps to add afterwards. Apple did offer a lot of different casing/strap combos, but if you wanted, say, the stainless steel watch with a link bracelet, you would have had to buy them separately. With Apple Watch Studio, you don’t have to buy anything extra. After making your selections, you click or tap...

Google settled a racial discrimination claim brought by a contractor who says that the company failed to adequately protect him from being “treated as a terror suspect,” while on the job for Google Maps, reports The Guardian. The Guardian says that Google retracted a contract offered to Ahmed Rashid (an alias) after he complained about being racially harassed on the job. Rashid, whom the paper identifies as a UK citizen of Moroccan descent, told the paper that he worked as a third-party contractor to “surreptitiously gather information about the strength and range of wifi signals inside individual stores in the targeted shopping centers,” which would allow users to use Google Maps with greater accuracy via WiFi signal, rather than GPS. Rashid explained to the paper that he and his...

If you know anyone who says phones have become boring and predictable, point them to gaming phones. The Black Shark 2 Pro, which was announced this week, prioritizes some specs that you probably won’t hear the largest phone makers mention onstage, or at least not yet. The Pro is a slightly revised model of the Black Shark 2, which was released earlier this year. The updated version improves on the touch response speed of the display by around seven milliseconds, down to 34.7ms from 43.5ms. That might not seem like much, but mere milliseconds (factoring in the screen’s touch response speed and network ping) could mean the difference between a win and a loss in competitive play. For context, the newly announced Asus ROG Phone II has a latency of 49ms. This phone is also among the first,...

When Google announced its new interface gestures in Android Q, I got a sense of déjà vu, because I’d already seen them in Huawei’s EMUI. And when Google candidly revealed the rear of its upcoming Pixel 4 phone last night, I was again reminded of a Huawei product, this time the Mate 20 Pro of last year, which had the same square camera module filled with lenses. Combining the two together, I can’t help but feel that the stuff Google is cooking up for us in late 2019 will be a retread of what Huawei already delivered a year earlier. That’s not a knock on Google, but a sense of appreciation for how far ahead Huawei has been. China’s leading smartphone maker might not always get everything right, and it’s currently caught up in some nasty trade war crossfire, but it happens to...

Arslan Kaipkulov, 15, from Russia revealed how his dreams 'came true' on the Ilyushin Il-96-300 aircraft - Putin's equivalent to Donald Trump's Air Force One A seriously-ill teenager has revealed what it is like inside of Vladimir Putin’s £390million luxury plane. Arslan Kaipkulov, 15, was allowed to step inside the Russian president's Ilyushin Il-96-300 - and was gifted a camera by the leader. The teenager, who is an aviation fanatic, was granted his wish personally by the Russian leader. Putin also gifted him a video camera to film on board his presidential Ilyushin Il-96-300 - when he captured sensitive images of the leader's rumoured gold-plated toilet, private wine stocks and even his double bed. However the boy was not allowed to show certain “confidential” parts of the...

The World Health Organization launched a TikTok account on Friday as part of its efforts to cut through coronavirus misinformation online. A specialized public health agency of the United Nations, WHO is one of the leading organizations working to contain the spread of the virus. In WHO's first video, Benedetta Allegranzi, technical lead of infection prevention and control, describes measures people can take to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus and directs them to the organization's website for additional information. "We are joining [TikTok] to provide you with reliable and timely public health advice," WHO wrote in the description of its first video. TikTok has been flooded with memes about the novel coronavirus over the past few weeks, with some users pretending to be...

When you explicitly tell an Android app, “No, you don’t have permission to track my phone,” you probably expect that it won’t have abilities that let it do that. But researchers say that thousands of apps have found ways to cheat Android’s permissions system, phoning home your device’s unique identifier and enough data to potentially reveal your location as well. Even if you say “no” to one app when it asks for permission to see those personally identifying bits of data, it might not be enough: a second app with permissions you have approved can share those bits with the other one or leave them in shared storage where another app — potentially even a malicious one — can read it. The two apps might not seem related, but researchers say that because they’re built using...

The Matrix is headed back to theaters for one week to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sci-fi classic. Specifically, it’ll be screened in the 135 Dolby Cinema AMC theaters around the country, from August 30th to September 5th. Technically, AMC is a few months late here — the film, which was written and directed by sibling duo Lana and Lilly Wachowski, was released on March 31st, 1999 — but given that the film came out so long ago, there are likely plenty of fans who never had the chance to see it properly in theaters. Or, more cynically, given Keanu Reeves’ recent current run of pop-culture hype (specifically, the popularity of John Wick 3 and his viral “breathtaking” E3 appearance), it’s possible both Warner Bros. and AMC want to cash in on the moment with the limited...

President Donald Trump's tentative trade deal with China, announced earlier today, has saved Apple from raising the prices or eating those price hikes itself, of some of its most popular products, including the iPhone. According to Bloomberg, which cites Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, Apple's top iPhone models could have been hit with a 15 percent tariff, which equates to a bump in the price of around $150 for the base model iPhone 11 Pro, if the trade deal had not been reached. The tariffs were set to go into effect on December 15th and would have impacted the iPhone, the iPad, and the MacBook line, among other products. "Trump delivered an early Christmas present to Apple," Ives said in a note to investors obtained by Bloomberg. "If this tariff went through it would have been a...
