Netflix has become the first streaming service to join the ranks of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) Tuesday, Hollywood’s most powerful lobbying group, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s the first time an internet-based, non-studio has been granted membership to the 97-year-old trade association which represents six legacy Hollywood studios — all of whom endorsed the streaming company’s new membership. “On behalf of the MPAA and its member companies, I am delighted to welcome Netflix as a partner,” MPAA’s CEO Charlie Rivkin said in a statement. “All of our members are committed to pushing the film and television industry forward, in both how we tell stories and how we reach audiences. Adding Netflix will allow us to even more effectively advocate for...

Over the past year, trade relations between the United States and China have continued to strain under increased tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Now, President Trump is shifting his focus toward Mexico, another of the US’s top trade partners, and consumer tech groups are worried. On Thursday, Trump announced that he plans to impose a 5 percent tariff on all imported goods from Mexico as a direct response to the number of unauthorized immigrants who are arriving in the United States via the southern border. The tax will go into effect on June 10th and increase each month, reaching a maximum of 25 percent in October, unless Mexico finds a way to deter illegal migration across the US southern border. In statements on Friday, top tech industry, lobbying, and advocacy groups...

Earlier this week, Microsoft removed a database of more than 10 million faces, intended as a test and training dataset for facial recognition algorithms, according to a report by the Financial Times. Known as MS Celeb, the database contained more than 10 million images of roughly 100,000 people, largely scraped from publicly available online sources. While no individual photo in the dataset was difficult to find, the volume of images and the structured data accompanying them made the dataset extremely useful in training programs to recognize a person’s face across different photos. The takedown came after an earlier Financial Times investigation found that many of the people represented in the dataset were not aware of it and did not consent to having their pictures used. A number of...

If you’ve been following phone news even a little bit, you know that Samsung’s flagship, stylus-equipped Galaxy Note 10 is coming August 7th. But it wasn’t until Nashville experienced its first scooter-related death that the mayor formally...

Huawei’s CEO, Ren Zhengfei, says that he expects US sanctions to cause the company’s revenue to drop by billions of dollars, Reuters reports. The company expects its revenue to drop to $100 billion this year, down from around $104 billion last year. Previously it said it expected to make $125 billion in revenue. “We did not expect [the Trump administration] would attack us on so many aspects,” Ren said, although he added that the company did not expect to cut R&D spending or conduct large-scale layoffs. The CEO had initially been defiant in the face of Trump’s executive order, and said that Huawei had contingency plans to deal with the ban. However, the full implications of the ban have since become more clear. Google has suspended the firm’s Android license, ARM will no...

Facebook gets into the meme-making biz with experimental Whale app Last week, Facebook quietly released a new meme-making app called Whale, The Information reports. The app is currently only available on the Canadian App Store, where its listing says it can be used to edit your own photos or images from a library of stock photos. You can then share your creations on social media platforms such as Instagram and Messenger. The app's listing confirms that it's been developed by Facebook's New Product Experimentation (NPE) team, which was set up earlier this year to develop new experimental apps for the social media giant. At the time, Facebook said it was using the separate brand name to set the expectation that its apps could change rapidly, or even shut down if the company finds that...

Spotify is adding new features to its Family Plan subscriptions to give parents more control over the listening habits of their children. Starting today in Ireland, and “soon” in the other countries where the plan is offered, parents will be able to set the Explicit Content Filter on their children’s accounts, preventing them from playing anything that Spotify marks as explicit. The ability to change the filter will be password protected, meaning only parents will have control over the setting. First announced in 2014, Spotify’s Family Plan is a way for up to six people to share a discounted $14.99 monthly subscription. Considering an individual Spotify Premium subscription is $9.99, it can result in a pretty massive price reduction. However, outside of a vague requirement that...
