Just over a year after its official launch, the Data Transfer Project is announcing a new set of partners and features. Today, Apple announced that it will be joining the project, developing interoperable systems to bring data in and out of iCloud. A number of alternative social networks have also joined the project, with Tim Berners-Lee’s Solid project enabling the import and export of contacts, and Mastodon allowing for the import and export of posts. An open-source project aimed at making it easier to transfer data from one service to another, the Data Transfer Project has mostly consisted of back-end coding to make data export tools like Google Takeout and Facebook’s Access Your Information tool compatible with each other. Right now, those tools let you download data directly to...

LOS ANGELES Federal investigators on Friday ruled out engine failure as a possible cause of the helicopter crash that killed basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others. The chartered Sikorsky S-76B helicopter that crashed into a hill Jan. 26 had two engines that burned in the aftermath, the National Transportation Safety Board said in an investigative update. "Viewable sections of the engines showed no evidence of an uncontained or catastrophic internal failure," the update states. After the crash, the NTSB has launched a Go Team to the site in an attempt to find the cause. The update reported that a witness to the crash said the area was "surrounded by mist," in the NTSB's paraphrasing, when the Sikorsky was spotted moving fast, descending and...

High cholesterol causes and symptoms

Published by:

Many people are completely unaware that they have high cholesterol, which is why it’s known as the silent killer. “There are no symptoms of high cholesterol,” says Dr. Dermot Neely, who runs a specialist lipid clinic in Newcastle upon Tyne. “The only real symptom is a blocked artery, which causes a stroke or heart attack. In severe cases, you can get cholesterol deposits in the tendons or around the clear part of the eye, but a doctor would rarely notice these during an examination.” So what is it? Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 38% of male and 37% of female deaths before the age of 75, with high cholesterol a serious risk factor. But it’s not all bad. “We all have cholesterol in the blood, and we all need it to be a healthy human,” says Dr. Neely. “It’s...

Facebook has reportedly signed an exclusive deal to put Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed games on its Oculus virtual reality headsets. The Information reported the news this morning, although it didn’t offer much detail about what those games would look like. The titles are apparently part of a larger push to acquire studios and back exclusive games, something Oculus has been doing on a smaller scale for some time. Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed owner Ubisoft has published several VR games, including the Oculus Rift launch exclusive Eagle Flight and the cooperative game Star Trek: Bridge Crew. It’s also released a couple of Assassin’s Creed-based “VR escape rooms,” but they’re only available at specific locations, not on home VR headsets. Exclusive games are already...

7-Eleven Japan shut down its mobile payment app

Published by:

On Thursday, 7-Eleven Japan suspended a recently-launched mobile payments feature on its 7Pay app after a flaw allowed a third party to make bogus charges on hundreds of customer accounts. The company released the feature on Monday, July 1st: it allowed customers to scan a barcode with the app and charge a linked credit or debit card. However, the company received a complaint the next day: a customer noticed a charge that they didn’t make. The app had a flaw, according to Yahoo News Japan (via ZDnet). A hacker would only need to know a user’s date of birth, their email, and phone number, and could send a password reset request to another email address. The app also defaulted people’s birthdates to January 1st, 2019 in instances where they didn’t fill out the field, making it even...

After a torrid few months, Huawei is now downplaying the idea that its homegrown Hongmeng operating system could serve as a drop-in replacement for Google’s Android on its smartphones. SVP Catherine Chen told reporters in Brussels yesterday that Hongmeng is not designed for smartphones and that Huawei plans to continue using Android, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reports. This follows similar comments last week from chairman Liang Hua, who said in comments reported by TechNode that “[Huawei hasn’t] decided yet if the Hongmeng OS can be developed as a smartphone operating system in the future.” Liang says the system was designed as a low-latency solution for IoT devices, while Chen describes it as being “for industrial use.” That’s a shift from Huawei’s previous...

Facebook is working to allow cross-messaging between Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, according to a report in The New York Times this morning. Each service will continue to operate as a standalone app, but according to the Times, Facebook is rebuilding the underlying infrastructure so that people who might use only one of Facebook’s properties could communicate with others within the company’s ecosystem. All of the apps will support end-to-end encryption as well. Facebook has yet to provide a timeline for when this will happen. “We want to build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want to message to be fast, simple, reliable and private,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end...

The United States has opened a national security review into TikTok's parent company over its acquisition of social media app Musical.ly, Reuters reports. In 2017, China-based TikTok owner ByteDance bought up the popular American lip-syncing app — and its user base — for $1 billion. Last year, the app was fully rebranded as part of TikTok. But in the time since the deal closed, TikTok has faced substantial pressure from US lawmakers who have questioned how the company moderates its political content and stores its user data. In a letter last month, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) called for an investigation into the company, writing that "Chinese-owned apps are increasingly being used to censor content and silence open discussion on topics deemed sensitive by the Chinese Government and...

The official Chinese variant of the Nintendo Switch will launch in mainland China next week, Tencent and Nintendo have announced. The bundle will sell for 2,099 yuan (~$297) and includes a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. That’s the only title officially approved for sale so far, according to China gaming analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, although other games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Odyssey are also confirmed to be on the way. So far it looks like Tencent and Nintendo are only releasing the original Switch model, not the smaller and cheaper Switch Lite. Preorders start today in China, and the console will formally go on sale on Tuesday, December 10th. As was previously announced, the Tencent-powered Switch makes use of the Chinese internet giant's services in a few...
